As the icy grip of winter tightens its hold across the North Indian region, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported minimum temperatures ranging from 7 to 10 degrees Celsius in most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and north Rajasthan on Saturday. Even over Delhi, south Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, the mercury maintained a chilly range of 7 to 10 degrees Celsius, as noted by the national weather forecasting agency.
From Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh to Jaipur and the national capital, cities up north grappled bone-chilling temperatures and reduced visibility due to thick fog on Saturday morning.
IMD predicts that this dense fog is likely to extend further to East India over the next two days, gradually diminishing thereafter. Simultaneously, cold day conditions are expected to endure across certain parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and North Rajasthan on December 31.
Furthermore, foggy conditions are anticipated in isolated pockets of Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand from December 30 to January 2; Jharkhand on the 30th; and Odisha, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on Saturday and Sunday.
IMD’s rainfall and snowfall warningIn response to the influence of a mild Western Disturbance, there is a high likelihood of light, isolated rainfall or snowfall occurring over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on December 31. Additionally, lower-level easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal are expected to contribute to light, isolated rainfall over Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh from January 1-3, 2024.
