IMD Weather Forecast: Dense fog to continue over northwest India, fresh rainfall spell over Tamil Nadu – Know more

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest weather forecast said that the northwest India is expected to experience continued dense to very dense fog over the next 3-4 days, affecting visibility and disrupting travel. Most parts of Punjab, significant portions of Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, as well as some areas in Uttar Pradesh, are experiencing these challenging weather conditions.

Additionally, isolated pockets in Jammu & Kashmir, northwest Rajasthan, and northwest Madhya Pradesh are also reporting the presence of dense fog.

Temperature drops

The minimum temperatures across several regions in India are currently experiencing a milder winter, ranging between 7-10°C over significant parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. In other areas such as Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, and interior Odisha, minimum temperatures are slightly higher, fluctuating in the range of 11-12°C.

This deviation from normal winter temperatures is notable, with some regions, including parts of Punjab, Delhi, West Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Gujarat, and northeast India, experiencing temperatures that are 2-3°C above the seasonal average.

Dense fog in Delhi delays flights, trains

On Wednesday, Delhi’s maximum temperature rose to 23.8 degrees Celsius, settling three notches above the season’s average. However, the morning saw dense fog, leading to disruptions in both flight and train services. The air quality index in the national capital persisted in the “very poor” category.

IMD forecasts that “dense to very dense” fog is expected to envelop the city during Thursday and Friday nights and early mornings. The anticipated weather conditions suggest maximum and minimum temperatures of around 21 and 6 degrees Celsius, respectively, on Thursday.

Intense cold wave continues in Kashmir

The Kashmir Valley continued to experience severe cold as dense fog disrupted early morning activities for the third consecutive day on Wednesday. Srinagar was shrouded in a thick layer of fog, with visibility in the city reduced to less than 50 meters, according to officials. On Tuesday night, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, a slight increase from the previous night’s minus 3.0 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorological Department forecasts mainly dry weather in the region until the end of the month, with foggy conditions prevailing in many towns, including Srinagar.The likelihood of snowfall is highest during this period, particularly in the higher reaches, where heavy snowfall is anticipated.
