Studying in Canada to get costlier from January 1, 2024

Canada has firmly established itself as a preferred destination for Indian students, offering them a pathway to a better future. Times Higher Education and QS have consistently ranked Canadian universities among the best in the world, a testament to their prominence.

As of December 31, 2022, Indian students accounted for a substantial 39.5% of the total international student population in Canada. This figure speaks to the magnetic appeal of Canadian education and the opportunities it holds. Moreover, these students constitutes 40% of the international student enrollment in Canada and, notably, contribute approximately CAD10 billion annually to the Canadian education sector.

Within this diverse group, approximately 209,930 were pursuing undergraduate degrees, 80,270 were on the path to postgraduate degrees, and 28,930 were engaged in diploma or certificate programs. This variety of academic pursuits underscores the wide-ranging opportunities available to Indian students in Canada.

The Canadian government has proactively pursued several initiatives to attract and support foreign students, with a special focus on Indian students. Canada has implemented measures to enhance its appeal as an educational destination for international students.

Student Direct Stream (SDS)

In 2022, Canada launched the Student Direct Stream (SDS), a fast-track visa processing program designed specifically for students from countries including India, China, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

To qualify, students need an acceptance letter from a post-secondary designated learning institution, proof of payment of the first year’s tuition fees, and a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), among other requirements. This program simplifies the visa application process, reducing waiting times for Indian students and making the journey to Canada more accessible.

Beginning January 1, 2024, the minimum cost of living financial requirement for students will be raised from the current 10,000 Canadian dollars to 20,635 Canadian dollars.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Extension

In April 2023, the Canadian government introduced the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Extension program, enabling international students to extend their stay in Canada for up to three years after completing their studies. This initiative offers Indian students valuable Canadian job experience and the chance to explore potential career opportunities in the country.

New visa rules to protect students from fraud

The Canadian government has recently announced changes to the International Student Program to safeguard students from fraudulent activities and facilitate their pursuit of education in Canada. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) minister unveiled a series of measures aimed at strengthening Canada’s international student program and safeguarding the interests of genuine students.

The enhanced verification process is designed to protect prospective students from letter-of-acceptance fraud and prevent issues faced by some students due to fraud investigations. It ensures that study permits are issued based solely on genuine letters of acceptance.

Canada’s efforts to make its education system more accessible, secure, and appealing to international students, especially those from India, have significantly boosted its popularity as an educational destination. The Indian student community in Canada not only enhances cultural diversity but also substantially contributes to the Canadian economy.
