Chennai techie chained, burnt alive by friend who underwent sex-change to marry her

On the eve of her birthday, a 24-year-old IT professional was chained, slashed and burnt alive by her childhood friend, who had allegedly undergone a sex change operation to marry her, in the outskirts of Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The incident took place in Thalambur near Kelambakkam, a quiet southern suburb of Chennai. The victim, identified as Nandini, was chained up and her wrists, feet and neck were slashed with a blade by her friend, Vetrimaran alias Pandi Maheshwari before she was set on fire late on Saturday. According to the police, the motive behind this gruesome act seems to stem from Vetrimaran’s suspicion that Nandhini had developed an interest in others and reportedly wanted to marry her.

Locals found the half-burnt body of Nandini and immediately informed the police. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

According to the police, Nandini and her friend Vetrimaran alias Pandi Maheshwari were natives of Madurai and studied together till Class 10. Having studied together in Madurai, Nandhini continued the friendship even after Vetrimaran underwent a sex-change operation. Both of them also worked together at a private IT firm in Thoraipakkam.

“They were friends and were living together in Chennai. No indication yet of any sexual assault. Whether Vetrimaran had displayed violent tendencies earlier is not clear. An investigation is on,” Tambaram Police Commissioner Amalraj said, as reported by NDTV.

The accused was arrested and sent to judicial custody. He is now facing charges of murder.
