In the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 announced on Thursday, Indore and Surat have emerged as the ‘cleanest cities’ in the country, with Navi Mumbai retaining the third position in the central government’s annual cleanliness survey.

President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards at a ceremony held in New Delhi, attended by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and other dignitaries.

Indore has secured the top spot for the seventh consecutive year, while Surat claimed the award for the first time, with Navi Mumbai maintaining its position as the third cleanest city.

On the other hand, in the ‘best-performing states’ category, Maharashtra clinched the top spot, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Survey results highlighted Maharashtra’s Saswad as the cleanest city among those with a population of less than 1 lakh, with Chhattisgarh’s Patan and Maharashtra’s Lonavala securing the second and third positions in this category. Varanasi and Prayagraj were acknowledged as the best and cleanest Ganga towns, respectively. Meanwhile, the Mhow Cantonment Board in Madhya Pradesh claimed the top rank in the category of the cleanest cantonment boards.

With 4,447 urban local bodies participating in Swachh Survekshan 2023, the government asserts it to be the world’s largest cleanliness survey, backed by 12 core citizen responses.

Where Indore maintained its stronghold on the first position, sharing the lead with Surat, Chandigarh fell short of securing a spot in the top 10, ranking eleventh in the Swachh Survekshan 2023 awards, positioning the city even below Delhi, which bagged the seventh spot, a slight improvement from the twelfth position last year.

In the category of cities with a population exceeding one lakh, Delhi excelled with a score of 8,728.3 out of a total of 9,500 marks, while Chandigarh secured 8,541.1 marks.

Evaluation criteria for the 4,477 participating cities included factors such as handling legacy dumpsites, effective management of plastic waste, implementation of the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ principles, and ensuring the well-being of Safaimitras.
