Exclusive Interview with Karan Johar- Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani was a deliberate attempt to showcase the subtleties of human emotions…

How involved are you with the ideation process?

I have been extremely involved in this project. As it is my first time creating a physical product, especially in the saturated beauty space, I wanted my personality to shine through, and my vision to seamlessly translate into the product. I saw MyGlamm as the perfect partners whose team not only understood my creative aspirations but also assisted me in crafting something extraordinary—stellar formulations, packaging that made a lasting impression, and a product that truly reflects my passion for beauty and individuality.

How do you ensure inclusivity and sustainability in the products?

Ensuring inclusivity and sustainability in our products is non-negotiable for POUT. We meticulously select diverse shades that complement various skin tones, ensuring everyone feels represented. Moreover, our commitment to sustainability involves eco-friendly packaging, cruelty-free practices, and sourcing ethically-produced ingredients.

You are a very successful producer and a brilliant director, but I want to understand how you decided to associate your name with a beauty brand and how your entrepreneurial journey has been so far.

Transitioning into the beauty industry with POUT felt natural, driven by a passion for transformation and self-expression. The entrepreneurial journey has been exhilarating. The response has been overwhelming, marking a gratifying venture into the world of beauty.

You know when a known name like yours is involved with some brand, it becomes an added responsibility to ensure it’s the best. Do you agree? What has been your take?

Of course, I agree, having my name attached to anything has always been something that reflects my vision, and like movies anything that you create will be your responsibility and the audience appreciating it will be my reward.

A still from Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem KahaniKaran, one thing about your filmography that I’ve noticed is that you’ve created a legacy and no one has a vision like yours. I want to understand how have you evolved as a filmmaker. How do you look at your journey?

Thank you for your kind words. I’ve always believed in evolving as a filmmaker and adapting to the changing times. Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani was a deliberate attempt to showcase the subtleties of human emotions, addressing the evolving sensitivities in our industry. My journey has been a continuous learning process, marked by a commitment to storytelling that resonates with the audience. Each project is a step in that evolution, a quest to connect with people on a deeper, more meaningful level.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was released in 1998. But you were working as an assistant director on Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995. I can say that you’ve seen the Hindi film industry closely. I want to understand from you how cinema and the process of filmmaking have changed over the years. What are the things from old times that you miss the most?

From the ’90s to now, Hindi cinema has undergone a profound transformation. Filmmaking back then had a charming simplicity and a more leisurely pace. I miss the unhurried nature and deeper connections in storytelling. However, the evolution has brought positive changes, with technology making filmmaking more accessible and narratives becoming diverse and relatable. While I cherish the old-school charm, I also appreciate the exciting possibilities that the present and future hold for Hindi cinema.

Dharma has given some of the incredible films but it is not easy to be a producer. While the audience understands the role of an actor, a director, or even a writer, most of them feel that a producer is just a person who invests money. I want you to explain it to my readers about the work of a producer. You are the best person to do that.

A producer is more than just an investor; they are the architects of a film. Responsible for the entire creative and business process, from idea conception to assembling the right team, managing budgets, and overseeing production. While not visible on screen, a producer’s influence is integral to every aspect of the filmmaking journey.

I just love how you carry yourself – be it your clothes or those amazing shoes you own. Thanks to Yash and Roohi we got a glimpse of your walk-in closet. I want to understand what fashion means to you.

Fashion, for me, is an extension of my personality and a form of self-expression. It’s not just about clothes; it’s about creating a statement, embracing individuality, and feeling confident. I see fashion as a way to convey my mood and make a lasting impression. It’s an art form that adds flair to everyday life, and I enjoy experimenting with different styles that reflect the many facets of my personality.

What is beauty for you?

Beauty, for me, transcends the physical and delves into the essence of a person. It’s about authenticity, kindness, and the radiance that comes from within. True beauty lies in confidence, compassion, and the ability to be unapologetically yourself.

Karan, at this stage in your career and life, how much value do you give to what others are saying – be it critics or faceless accounts on social media? Does it get to you sometimes and you want to reply back? How do you keep yourself calm and composed?

At this stage in my career and life, I’ve learned to value constructive feedback and criticism. While I appreciate genuine opinions, I don’t let faceless comments or undue negativity affect me. It’s crucial to stay focused on the work and the creative process. I believe in the power of self-awareness, and I choose to respond with grace rather than react impulsively. Maintaining a sense of calm and composure is essential; it allows me to stay true to my vision and navigate the diverse opinions that come with being in the public eye.

You are often blamed for setting the wrong standard around love, and relationships. Being someone who lives and breathes Bollywood, I can say that I am waiting for my Raj. What do you have to say about this? Do you believe in happily ever after personally?

While Bollywood often idealizes love, real relationships are nuanced. I believe in the beauty of love and a potential happily ever after, recognizing that it’s a unique journey for each individual. Cinematic inspiration is great, but real relationships require understanding, growth, and acceptance, grounded in reality.
